Just asking peoples thoughts on this in ref to a job I recently applied for and the response from employer
I recently applied for a job by email with a local company and apparently sent my CV in the wrong format. This is what response I got from the head of HR at the company.
(names and odd bits have been edited but the main gist is accurate)
Dear ***
Thank you for taking an interest in****. However, you really should pay attention to the name and file format of the attachement to your application.
Should you still be interested please attach your CV correctly named with a file suffice that aloows me to open it.
Regards
********
HR Director
I thought the email was really patronising and as you can see contained spelling mistakes. I think a simple, thank you for applying for the above role but we cannot recognise your CV format. Could you send it again in word or PDF would have sufficed. I had to rise to the bait and responded with the following email which I know would obviously rule me out of getting the job
And maybe you should pay attention to your response as there are a number of spelling errors by using a spellchecker. Not very professional.
*******
I didnt expect any further response but he/she replied back with
I am glad you spotted them, doesn't set a good impression does it, exactly the point.
*********
I just thought this was so unprofessional and replied to emphasise this. it appears from the initial email he/she deliberately wrote the email in response to my application with the spelling mistakes to see how I would react. Even if I had attached my CV, I am fairly sure they would not have taken my application any further anyway
Rant more or less over but just thought it was so unprofessional how a head of HR would behave

I have it saved in both word 97-2003 and PDF and feel sure it was sent in word. It seemed strange and I didnt query what format they said they had received. Never had any issues sending it to anyone else. I would have happily sent it again but for the tone of the email0 -

Let's face facts - if they didn't want you then they wouldn't have given you the opportunity to resubmit your CV.
IMO you acted like a child.0 -

You are entitled to your opinion. If that was the case why did their email deliberately contain spelling errors? Did they want me to point that out to them when I submitted my CV after they ridiculed my application.0 -

Was that remark really necessary?'I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore'0 -
Doesnt matter, thats the nature of this side of the forum, everyone but me is harsh.
if you wanted the job then your response was unwise, if it didnt matter then cool if it made you feel better.
i doubt the mistakes were done on purpose, you caught him/her out and they are trying to make out they made spelling errors to highlight your incorrect cv format.. makes sense right.
goodnight.0 -

Agree with the above.
Sounds like you dodged a bullet with that one! Can't see anything wrong with a word doc or pdf.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -

And this HR employee didn;t???
HR director can't spell, so they can hardly talk.
Best not working for an organisation employing prats like this in high places, in my opinion!0 -
Check your email sent folder and check what you sent.
Check you can open it with a current version of office AND the other open source options.
Check what formats they are accepting.
resend.
Don't give up yet.
Maybe they like people that can do a bit of banter.
If you have been sending off to other places and hear noting or get a polite sorry not this time, check what you have been sending.0 -
The e-mail from the company was unprofessional, but the reaction of the OP was stupid. If the OP is going to react that way to any negative comment, I wouldn't want them working for me and I think they've been very fortunate to still have the chance to submit an application.
Attachments can be a pain. My wife regularly sends stuff home from her work and sometimes she can open the attachment and sometimes she can't. Neither the software at work or home has been updated recently so there is no logic.
I'm surprised that anybody is still saving Word in 97/2003 format and it may be that the recipient is not able to read documents in that format any more.0
