Can't clear app cache on phone

Hoping the collective wisdom of MSE can help me here - Google has drawn a blank !
I'm trying to clear the application cache on my phone for a few apps - partly to speed things up a bit, but mainly to try and resolve a couple of annoying, though minor glitches. In the past it's been very simple - go into Settings ... Apps, click on the app in question and click the "Clear cache" button. But now, when I click the "Clear cache" button, nothing happens - nothing to say "working", or "calculating", or anything like that, it just does nothing - and the display tells me that the cache is still using x amount of storage.
It's an HTC Desire 510, running Android 4.4.3. Yeah, it's old and basic by today's standards, but so far it's suited an old dinosaur like me perfectly !
Any suggestions gratefully received

"There is another option to clear the cache. Go to Settings/Storage and scroll down to Cached data. It will calculate the buildup. You can then tap that box. An option will come up to clear the cache. This does a great job, so that you don't have to individually clear each app."0 -
Thanks, Andypix ... alas that option doesn't appear on my phone. Under "Storage" I have "Apps", Music"etc., plus "Make more space" - which sounds promising, but there's no "clear cache" optrion under there

Its a bit of a messy solution but there are 3rd party apps that can do this ..
History Eraser Pro
Clean master
nb. I have not tested and do not endorse these apps0 -
Thanks - I have tried Clean Master, which my Googling turned up, to no avail. But I'll give the History Eraser a shot.
End of the day, it's not a huge problem to be honest - for the amount I use my phone I can live with the odd niggle. It's just an annoyance more than anything !
But I appreciate the help and suggestions, thanks :beer:0 -
Could you uninstall the affected apps then reinstall them from the Play Store?0

Yes, that was going to be my final thing to try - at the risk of losing all my game progress, boo hoo
But yes, I'm pretty sure that would work - although, it's not just one app that this seems to be affecting, it's a few of them ( Google maps being one of them, which I use as a very good, free Satnav ).0 -
This will work but be careful http://droider.eu/2016/05/29/how-to-wipe-cache-partition-on-htc-phone-running-marshmallow/0
