So many hair dyes which to go for?

Hi there

My wife has started to go grey very minimally (around 5%), going to the hairdressers is no longer viable due to money . I wondered if anyone could recommend a brand and product type they use which they are happy with and or which ones are to be avoided. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hi

I also dont have masses of greys and have always used L'Oreal as they are everywhere but I have found they dont cover greys for very long and was having to redo it 3 weekly.

I then found one I bought as a one off on discount and like a fool didnt take note of what is was because it has been briliant and lasted 6/7 weeks.

Makes me suspicious now that L'Oreal are designed to last less time so you buy the products more frequently unless its just my hair type.

Does she even want to dye her hair?

    Hi thanks for replies.

Yes its at her instigation that I posted this question. I am not bothered by the greys in the slightest. I will tell her to steer clear of L'Oreal, thanks.

In that case it's trial and error really. Has she ever dyed her hair at home before or is she a total newbie to all this?
I use garnier nutrisse and find it very easy to use, and it's usually on offer 2 for £9 in boots.
She might want to try a semi permanent dye to begin with to find a colour match.

    Hi

Yes she will be totally new to doing this, our financial circumstances have change recently so going to the salon is no longer possible. I will pass your advice on, Thank you

Check places like Home Bargains and even Poundland as they can be a lot cheaper than supermarkets, although the range of colours is usually more limited.

Anyway, it's not grey, it's natural ash-blond highlighting.

    Hi

Top tip for first time dying, if at all unsure which shade try the lighter one first. Its easy to re dye darker but waiting for a too dark shade to grow out / wear off takes forever.

I use superdrug own brand "performance" and stock up when they have 2for a fiver deals

I also mix up half box amounts in a pound shop tinting bowl when I just want to do the roots.

Second tip: pound shop tinting bowl and brush set makes mixing and even application easier, wash out and re use for years.

Whilst you're in there check out the colour protecting shampoo and conditioner, coloured hair appreciates a bit of TLC.

Dyed hair also seems to react/ bleach more with strong sunlight and chlorine in swimming pools! Start out light brown and end up blond thanks to these two.

Foam dyes are easier to apply because they tend not to drip
