mobile without contract

Does anyone know where I can purchase what is esentially a sim-free mobile phone without getting a contract ? I'd like a new phone but dont wanna walk into tmobile / orange etc on the high st cos thats just a rip-off. Any recommendations apart from Ebay ?

Hate to say this, but most sim-free phones are more expensive. Unfortunately the market is propped up because people like Orange etc subsidise the phones that are sold on their network because they hope to make the money out of the phone calls.
