If your will is not complicated then perhaps your bank offers a will service. I know mine does & the charges are much less than they are if a solicitor is writing up a will for you.
There is also a scheme called Free Wills Fortnight, more details here http://www.freewillsfortnight.org.uk/ but the scheme for this year is finished & it doesn't cover all areas anyway. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
From the solicitor's point of view, if you go to them and ask them to draw up a will they will use their in-house templates, which they have already prepared and checked, so a lot of the work is already done. If you draw up the will yourself, they will have to check it carefully, so you are paying for their time for doing that - which is probably the same as if they did the whole thing for you from scratch.0

Not to mention that by doing so the solictors have a duty of care and can be sued for errors etc so there will be a premium to cover their liability and law society angle
As said you'd probably be best using their service templates0 -
Will Aid is in November you can get a will drawn up by a solicitor for a suggested donation of £75 to their charity. Google Will Aid it will give you all the details. Did mine this way several years ago, used a reputable local solicitor, no problems.0

I got my will done for free because I'm a member of the TGWU union. It's worth checking it out if you're also with a union.DEBT FREE BY 60Starting Debt 21st August 2019 = £11,024

Banks don't charge (much) for a will because they will insist on naming themselves as executors and then recoup the cost in mega-fees (far more than most solicitors) when the time comes to get probate.0

is there no will aid this year then? I looked on website suggested and it says next is Nov 2008? I think its a great idea esp as one of the charities is the Red Cross for which my grandfather worked for many many years it would be fitting to give my payment for my will to them, thanks for the information0

OH and I paid £50 (between us) for mirror wills that were slightly more complicated than normal. That was through the Co-operative Bank, and they aren't executors of either of our wills. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
We switched one of our Barclays bank accounts to "Additions" and got the Will writing Service free of charge - apart from the money we paid fo rhte Additions account which was something like £11.50 per month for 2 months.........then reverted back to standard Barclays Current Account.
And we didn't even have to name the bank as executors - the service was really good, and they even called a couple of times to ensure that they understood something to be correct.0
