Suddenly on emergency tax, best way to contact HMRC?

I've been put on the BR tax code for my second job although my employment situation has not changed for over a year.

I did, however, change my surname and I haven't heard back from hmrc that that was processed. I changed my me for my first job without any resulting change of tax code.

What's the best way to contact hmrc in your experience? I have given up after 45 mins in queue on phone but I imagine that's the quickest way to get anything sorted?

Sick of over paying tax every year then waiting months to get it back when I needed it at the time that I earned it! Grrrrr

Telephone is by far the best way, unless it's something that can be done via your tax account if you already have online access to the Government Gateway. Best advice is to call early in the morning, lines open officially at 8 but you might be able to get through a bit earlier than that.
  • BR tax code is the norm for a second job and definitely isn't emergency tax, with emergency tax you can earn £220/week before any tax is deducted.

If the issue is that you have two relatively low paid jobs so you need your tax allowance split between the jobs then the quickest thing to do is probably to log onto your personal tax account on gov.uk and update your account to show an upto date estimate of how much salary/wage you will get from each job.
