Jam jar spice rack

Options
Sorry if this is on wrong board, took me a long time to decide where to post!

I'd like to make a spice rack as shop-bought ones have such small containers which would be impractical for the quantity of herbs and spices that we get through. The cheapest way to get jars seems to be to buy supermarket value jam/marmalade but that would mean ending up with A LOT of jam to use up.

Any ideas for what I could do with all that jam or marmalade? (Without just spending lots more money to get lots of ingredients to make other things)

Or any advice on making the actual rack/seen any cheap that may be the right size?

This is a project that I've been meaning to do for a while so I thought I should get some advice to motivate me!

Thanks :-)

    Hi,

well here's an idea for the rack,

just attach lid to bottom of shelf, then jars screw on/off.

Edit: you don't need to buy jam/marmalade, pickle jars, coffee jars, any old jars will do, get your neighbours to save jars for you.

Put a "Wanted" on your local Freecycle. I can't bear to throw anything away, I just store up my jars until I see a plea from somebody or stick an "Offer" on if I have accumulated a dozen or so.
  • Hmmm I wonder if a strong magnet would work witb that hanging from shelf idea may need to check lids are magnetic though! I like the idea of them not tou ching surface so easier to clean.
  • Hi,

magnetic strip might work, but then depends on how many jars, and weight.

The good thing about the under shelf idea is that they are out of the way and not taking up too much space.

Are you wedded to the idea of glass jars, or would you consider other options? I've just bought some of these:http://www.lakeland.co.uk/17626/3-Lakeland-Grazing-Boxes

Plenty of other sizes/options available including Tesco, Poundland etc. You can see what's inside, they are cheap you can just stack similar sizes.

In terms of buying jam jars; I'm sure I remember there being a store- I think it may have been either Waitrose/John Lewis or Tesco, who were selling jars (empty) almost identical to the Maman style jars. It was posted in an article somewhere like the Metro because the jars were more than those with the jam inside (something like £3 vs £2.40). I can't remember more details than this but maybe check John Lewis or Waitrose or similar to see if they sell empty jars?

Other than that, try Ikea or pound shops for empty jars, they seem like the sort of place who would sell things like this for (relatively) not a lot of money.
