Veg box - mouldy marrow

I have been getting an organic veg box delivered for a couple of weeks now and have been very pleased with the contents and amount. Last Friday there was a marrow in it which I put in the cupboard where I keep my potatoes and onions. I went to use it last night and it was mouldy - not just a little bit but almost all of it.

I have had marrows before which I have bought from a supermarket or dad's home grown ones and they have kept for weeks.

OH says I should complain to the company. What do you think? Surely it should have kept for longer?

  • It certainly wouldn't do any harm to mention it to them.

I found this with the organic boxes - its why I stopped getting them. Produce went off really quickly and certainly in the case of tomatoes I don't even think that the taste was better.

Surely if the op has had her dad's home grown marrow, the organic ones should keep about the same time. I like to think that my hg veg is almost organic, or am I just kidding myself:confused:. At least I don't add anything to preserve them.

tell the company about the marrow. Maybe it got too wet at some point after harvesting. They will want to know. My veggie box squashes and marrows have lasted for weeks in years gone by

Strange I found the opposite. My box lasts at least 4 times longer than the stuff I used to get from tescos, so worth the extra for me as I save it in waste.

catkins - I would mention it, strangly enough I have friends in a different part of the country who use the same company as me who have deliveries on a Friday and they aren't as happy with thier stuff as I am with mine. I'm sure they would rather know and have a chance to put it right than have you disatisfied and potentially leave them in the future.
  • I would definitely say something. I have had organic marrows from friends allotments in the past and they are very good keepers if stored properly - can last for weeks. Just mention it to them in a friendly fashion - if they are a good company then they would like to know if something isn't up to scratch and may offer to compensate you with more veg etc.

I used to love having an organic veg box and the only reason I gave it up about a year and a half ago was not being able to get through it each week due to illness/stress. The taste and keeping qualities of the fruit and veg were always very good indeed, most of it was locally sourced and now things have improved I am considering ordering again.

  • I would say something - with my box if anything isn't right, and I tell them I get something extra free in the next box.

Maybe it was the companies I was using - I know a lot of people on here and elsewhere prefer the organic boxes. I may try farm shops so that I can select what I want and the quantities I want/will use. Good luck catkins - hope you get a result from the veg company.

  • Could well be, skintlass - especially if its a company that delivers nationally... the one I used got most of its stuff from one farm about 15 miles away with top ups from their neighbours and a small amount of imported stuff. Farmers shops and farmer's markets may well prove a more satisfactory solution for you. Maybe you could butter up some local allotment holders ? as sometimes they would only be too pleased to give or sell cheaply their surplus to an appreciative person.

Just a tip on storing marrows, squashes, pumpkins and the like to help with the keeping qualities - in a cool area is obvious ( although you don't need to put them in the fridge ) but if you are going to lay them flat on the ground or a shelf, make sure you turn them often. If you have any netting or net/string bags then hang those up and store them that way, or in carrier bags hung up, or veg rack shelves :)

I sent an email - not complaining, just saying that I was surprised as normally marrows keep for quite a while. I have just got home from work and there is a message on my answermachine from them apologising and they say they will put something extra in my box this week!!! I wonder what it will be?
