Hiking boots and rain gear?

Looking to buy a set of hiking gear including boots and waterproof jacket + trous.

Not knowing anything about this myself, does anyone have suggestions for good value options please? If some brands are worth the extra, that would be good to know, too.

If you have a Decathlon nearby try them - their own brand stuff is normally good value

Go Outdoors both discount hard & offer discounts for DofE, scouts, servicefolk etc - well worth asking or checking by phone if your profession, club membership etc includes any discounts?! They do price match as well...

What you need to consider is where will you be doing the walking, in low land near to civilisation or hills over 3,000feet. If the first and you buy cheap and it does not do its job properly you get wet and uncomfortable but not life threatening. If going high you need to spend a bit more. Try Go outdoors or Cotswold or Blacks.

don't try sports direct as their 'walking boots' are not waterproof
