I have been trying to help a relative who gets a state pension this year.
He retired at 60 and never paid anymore NI after that, he had 40 full years up to 15/16 but being contracted out he needed 2 more years to enhance his pension, not phoning hmrc but dwp they said he needed to pay 2015/16 and 2017/18 baffling?

The 15/16 to me will not enhance his pension, but 17/18 would.

Should the 2 years not have been 16/17 and 17/18?

It's far from a complete picture but have you checked online, as a starter for ten:

No i don't need to check mine its for someone else, but have give them your link.
What i have read myself suggests only pre 16/17 will enhance it.

Checked this morning and NI record is updated with the payments - wasn't there at the weekend.
  • Going back to the algorithm for generating the 18 figure reference.

I paid a part year last year, but the part of the code saying how much I was paying is still the amount for the full year. Also, the numbers from my NI number are in a different order than the one on here. And my last letter is different.

I want to pay some more years now, but don't know if I can use the same reference number or not. I suppose I will have to sit on the phone and see how long I will have to wait!
    May spend - £291.40/£320.00
    June spend - £106.40/£320.00

PS: remember to say if you concur with this assessment so that we can have more confidence in this approach.

Just phoned today and got my Reference Number - no problem with getting the details.

I was a wee bit worried when I worked out the significance of the digits as my NI number was there but in a different order. However after finding your post it concurs with your assessment. Still don't know the significance of the last digit.

We'll see when my forecast and NI record gets updated.

    Hi Sledgehead,

Thank you so much for supplying the National Insurance formula required to obtain ones 16 digit reference number when paying Class 3 voluntary contributions.

I worked mine out using Sledgehead's formula and paid the £733.20 required for 2016/17 via my Bank of Scotland online facility. The HMRC NICO account details were already listed in my 'recipients' list (strange but true!) and I filled in the calculated reference number and amount in the space provided.

A slightly tentative three and a half weeks later, and my HMRC NI 2016/17 year appeared as 'full'! (Relief all round).

Thanks for saving me ages waiting on the phone service - and I'm now fully equipped to pay next year's contributions in a worry free state of mind. M
