I was going to say/suggest that, but then I thought how complex that can be to explain it bit by bit to a remote person.... so stayed quietFYI You don't have to remove any other Office software to be able to install and use Open Office.
If it's something simple you could even do it in google docs spreadsheets.
EDIT: Beaten to it, but it's certainly true, it's like having Internet exploder and Firefox on the same machine. During the installation you can also choose whether or not to make open office the default for docs and xls', the default is that it won't so don't think it'll start taking over your machine.
