Tracing deceased relatives pension

Any idea how to trace pension for a deceased relative with no pension scheme info? A letter was sent to his previous address containing a cheque and the new owner of the house returned the letter (after opening it!) and then informed us but didn't take note of the details. We are pretty sure it's a pension lump sum as he would be 60 this year but we were unaware that he had a pension. Thank you in advance

Thanks Xylophone
My Mum is going to call them today. Unfortunately the relative in question was a bit of a hermit so although we know he worked, we are not sure where so don't have any company names. Hopefully his National Insurance number will be enough to go on. 0 -

...Don't get too excited - the trustees of the scheme may pay out to a named beneficiary on an expression of wishes form but I don't believe that they are obliged to remit a death benefit to more distant relatives not named by the pension holder.0 -
As the payment was actually paid to him ( although returned), it may be that the sum in question is due to his estate.0

...but if it was a pension commencement lump sum due at retirement age, it would not be due if the gentleman had already died.
That's why I made the comment on a potential death benefit, which may or may not be due to his estate, dependent on whether the pension provider holds an Expression of Wishes form.0
