In the first 2 years, they can get rid of you for any reason, as long as it's not for the automatically unfair reasons listed here: https://www.gov.uk/dismiss-staff/unfair-dismissals

What is the reason for the 2 year thing? What is significant about 2 years? Employers often say "3 month probation period". Really its 2 year probation.
Sometimes my advice may not be great, but I'm not perfect and I do try my best. Please take this into account.

Indeed. However, an employer can specify a shorter notice period during probation period - we say 1 week on either side, for example. After probation, we require a month's notice from the employee.

I was talking to a manager earlier about whether we needed to set a probation period for another colleague who's been offered an extension of contract in a slightly different role. We agreed there wasn't a lot of point, given that we were sure this person can do the new role, even though it's different to their original role. And that we can still get rid of them pronto because they've not been with us for two years.

Hello, thanks for the replies. I did end up finding a new job. I worked all of last week and on the Wednesday she told me I wouldnt be needed this week as they're on holiday... so not exactly worked out well.

So would you be needed when they get back from holiday ?
