Self assessment - income from spouse

Hi

I submit a self assessment form each year, as I am self employed as a sole trader.

The mortgage for the property I'm in is just in my name but my wife lives with me and pays money into my personal account each month to contribute to bills. This is a variable sum to go towards the mortgage payment, the energy bills, credit card bill and food etc.

Do I need to declare this on my self assessment tax return? Is there anywhere I can add this without paying tax on it, as it's money she's earned after tax? Is it maybe exempt or linked to Marriage Allowance?

Thanks.

You do not need to declare household money

You don't need to declare it. You wife has already paid tax on it (unless she is under the tax limit)

Ok. What about for a mortgage application (single not joint)? Can I present the bank statements and prove that I have additional income from my wife to aim for a higher mortgage amount?
