Laptop won't boot from USB.

I have an old HP DM1 laptop. It's slow as anything so I thought I'd install The OS chrome books use to test out as I'm thinking of replacing it with a chromebook.

Whatever I do I can't get it to boot from the USB. Press F9 on boot. Gives me options I select the USB drive. It just boots normally.

Changed the boot options in the bios. Made the USB stick first. It just boots normally.

Tried every USB port.

Thought maybe it didn't like the iso so tried Windows 10 and Windows 7. Same thing.

I did Google and some sites suggested using the HP format utility but that gives me an error of 'device is read access only'.

Anyone got any ideas?

Some BIOS simply don't allow you to boot from USB.

In other cases you need to make sure the USB stick has been formatted to be bootable. Have you tried using RUFUS to make a bootable USB holding the boot media from your ISO?

What is the full model number?

Turn machine off. Plug bootable USB media in. Turn machine on and press F10 to get into BIOS setup. Go to the System Configuration menu > Boot Options and check in your media is listed there. If it is, select it. Exit saving the changes.

RUFUS is what I always use.

Top of my head I don't know the full model number. I've already changed the boot order in the bios. Media is listed, it just wont boot from it.

Does that machine have an option for UEFI and Legacy? You will need to switch Secure Boot off if there is the option.
Having Windows 7 as the original OS threw me for a bit.

Doesn't seem to be any secure boot or UEFI in the BIOS N

Did you choose MBR within Rufus? FAT or NTFS?

I have always just used the RUFUS defaults. Not sure what they are off top of my head.

The old default was MBR. The new defaults are GPT. So you'll have to change them.
Otherwise swap between NTFS and FAT32.
