cheap weddings abroad

hi, my sister who is currently moving jobs and countries really want to get married in august 2008,to save money they wish to go away to italy? but we are open to suggestions.

Ive got drafted in to do some searching for possible venues / countries we really are determined to go with the cheapest mostly because our family is huge, by going away we can cut it down to approx 30, staying at home would involving a basic list of just aunts and uncles would bring it up to 40,on our side alone not to mention similar aged / favourite cousins and friends bringing the total to nearer 250 collectively.

can anyone tell me do you need to hire a wedding planner oir book it through a travel agent or is it possible to organise ourselves,

we have considered a large villa were family can cater for the day themselves.

please any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Hi
I am pretty sure you can plan it yourself. Think ease of doing this partly depends on which type of wedding you want. If you want a church wedding I think you contact them directly to get the ball rolling initially, assume it would be the same for a villa wedding, perhaps contact a venue and a celebrant.

For any type of wedding you need to complete certain paperwork but apparently can't start doing this until 6 months before the wedding and no later than 4 months before.

    You might find this useful:
    http://www.wedding-in-rome.com/guidance.htm

I also found this on the British Emabassy website:
'Where both parties are resident in the UK they may give notice to a UK Superintending Registrar in the district where they are resident. The Consular office in whose district the marriage is to take place will issue the "Certificates of no Impediment" required by the local authorities.'

    If you go to:
    http://www.britishembassy.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1056116914981

you can find some more information on documentary requirements and there is also a link there relating to charges for services and some links at the bottom with marriage agencies and English speaking churches etc.

Hope this is of help. I too am trying to plan a wedding abroad - hopefully Italy or New York but I am only in the initial stages of planning. If you find anything more useful can you please let me know, it would be a great help.

    Thanks
    Emma.
  • I am getting married in Italy in September this year, and generally prices are working out less than in the UK, for one thing, you don't have to pay corkage on your drinks in the evening and can actually take them over yourself. This is just one bonus.

If you don't speak Italian or don't have any contacts, I would recommend a wedding planner though. I did tons of research before I found mine and now have a brilliant one in Tuscany, and she has been incredible, and very reasonable, though there are some advertised which are 1000 euros plus! which is a complete rip off. Mine is less than half that, but fantastic.

We went out to Italy for a viewing trip and she organised a full itinerary with venues, caterers, florists etc, so we pretty much decided who to use and what we wanted within that week.

I would completely recommend her as she is extremely knowledgeable and is also from Scandinavia. Which is actually quite good as Italians, though lovely are very relaxed, do things in their own time, and have their own set ways of planning things. So she understands the UK way of organising weddings which is being kept up to date with whats happening, being totally organised and also being honest with you as to what you can and can't do within your budget.

If you are thinking of getting married in Italy, particularly Tuscany in a castle, or villa, or somewhere else in the area, I would very much recommend emailing Pia on info@invitoscana.it to ask for more advice. Say Jayne recommended you!

My OHs niece got married at the Kefalos Beach Hotel, Paphos, Cyprus a year or so ago. We've stayed at the hotel since (didn't go to the nieces wedding) and it is nice.

They do a lot of weddings - we saw 3 in our fortnight holiday ranging from the couple and their son and no guests, through a wedding party of about 15 Scotsmen in ther kilts, with family and partners, to a full blown chairs and pagoda on the beach thing. I say beach, but I mean lawn as there is no real beach.

The hotel has its own little chapel where I think they do the ceremony and they have the restaurant or a private function room for hire. The photos of the nieces wedding were lovely and she was very happy with everything.

I don't know what she did about a wedding planner. I can find out if you are interested.
If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.

I have been asked to organise my friend's wedding - she is planning on getting married in May 09 in Amalfi, Italy. It is helpful that both she and I speak Italian, she had contacted a wedding planner initially who quoted over £2K for the wedding ceremony and £4K for the reception. Needless to say my friend thinks that it is OTT and would rather that I organised it for her. It is all a bit scarey to be honest and if anyone knows of a fabulous restaurant in Amalfi, I would be grateful if you could let me know (we don't want pizza - just beautifully presented tasty food).

My brother got married here. John and Liliana were brilliant and helped plan everything. The wedding went swimmingly well. They even organised a hairdresser, makeup artist, etc! xxx

    Hi,

We got married last year in Ayia Napa, Cyprus and it was amazing!
We stayed and were married at the Grecian Sands Hotel which is lovely and they make you feel really special.

I had my personal wedding co-ordinator out there who organised everything for me and even with paying her it was fairly cheap to get married out there.

If you want anymore info feel free to pm me :0)

For a lovely wedding abroad, fairly cheap why not think of Gibraltar?
It's a British dependency so everything is done in English, you dont need any other legal documents apart from Birth certificates, Passports, and any divorce papers if appropriate. You don't have to give much notice and you can marry in a civil ceremony in the registry office, hotels, historic buildings, botanical garden and even on top of the rock! The only place you can't get married is the beach.
There are cheap flights into Malaga (Costa del Sol) and the accommodation is reasonable both on the Costa and in Gibraltar.
