Android 'airplane' mode

I'm shortly going abroad on holiday, and intend putting my phone permanently on 'airplane' mode.
This obviously prevents me from using my phone in the normal way, but does it also prevent people from leaving messages and me incurring charges while out of the country?

Yes. Your charges are where your phone connects to a network and receives the messages. If you stay firmly on airplane mode your phone can't connect, so you can't receive the messages.
If you switch airplane mode off on the runway at Heathrow you "receive" the messages from the local tower.
Although it might not be necessary check with your provider, quite a few now don't charge abroad to receive just send.0 -
If you are going to the EU then from Monday (June 5th) roaming charges are being abolished.0

They all seem to be boasting about dropping roaming charges as though it was their own idea. Probably some are doing so a short time before they have to.0

Three, to their credit, have dropped roaming charges in a bunch of countries around the world long ahead of the EU regs - I was thrilled to go to Sri Lanka 2 years ago and be able to roam cost-free

Yes 15thI think its 15th not 5th, isn't it?
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/phones/2017/05/revealed-eu-ban-on-mobile-roaming-charges-wont-stop-firms-charging-some-extra-fees-for-dataNew EU rules which apply from Thursday 15 June were supposed to mean "the end of roaming charges", with holidaymakers no longer facing additional charges for making calls, sending texts and using mobile data when roaming in the EU (plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway soon after).0 -
Here's an extract from what Virgin sent to me, quite fortuitous timing as I'm going to an EU country tomorrow so I'll only have 1 day there before the end of roaming charges. I must admit when I saw 5th I was a bit surprised as I thought I'd previously seen a later date, which I guess is the 15th.
"We've got some great news from 5th June, you'll be able to use your UK texts, minutes and data anywhere in the EU. And anything you use outside of your allowance will cost no more than it would back home. From 5th June 2017 you will no longer need to purchase a travel data pass to use data within the EU."0
