O2 Default - Completely Unaware

Hi there,
I reviewed my credit file today and saw that I have a default recorded by O2, which was under my closed accounts, for £20. Of which I paid anyway. Totally bizarre.
Apparently the account defaulted in July 2012 and I had no idea this happened. And especially for £20!!
I have emailed their credit referrals for more information but does anyone know how to manage this?
It was passed to Lowells who I spoke to this morning who said that there was nothing they could do as O2 submitted the default.
Thanks
Shaun

Hi Shaun,
This is something that you will need to try and resolve through a complaint. As long as you paid the £20 immediately, when it was due, there should be no default recorded and you can try and complain to get it removed. However, if there was a delay from the request for payment to the payment being made, that could explain things.
The default on your credit file is not the same as the one sent in the post. It can be recorded on your file when the creditor feels the 'relationship has broken down' and no postal notice is required for this. Phone debts are not subject to the Consumer Credit Act but you can ask for more information.
Based on the fact that you say it has all been paid (and therefore, I assume it is listed as £0) I would suggest you make a Subject Access Request for data. This can cost up to £10 to do and they have 40 days to comply. You will then need to prove to o2 that you paid this, on time and therefore, the default shouldn't be on your file and ask for it to be removed. If they refuse you can escalate it to Telecommunications Ombudsman.
If the default is correct then I am afraid it cannot be removed and will come off in July 2018.
