Working in China

My DS is currently doing a TEFL qualification with view to teaching English in China. We have done quite a bit of research on the different companies but wondered if anyone has any first hand experience to share - either themselves or their son/daughter? Very interested to hear about it and any tips/ pitfalls. Thanks

    1st, whats DS?

check google, plenty sites based on this, something to look at while waiting. From what i know, it can be okay but it wont be a career like in the UK.

Thanks. We have done lots of searching on internet. Just was interested in anyone's first hand experience.

  • Didn't do China but did Japan. TEFL is a hugely mixed bag over that part of the world.

Official government programmes like JET in Japan and NET in Hong Kong pay decent money, especially the latter. There are plenty of other options however but some fairly dodgy and by and large, TEFL is not much of a career.

For a year or so of adventure, however, it can be a great experience.

Thanks. I think it's the year of adventure he's looking for. I'll look at the 2 programmes you mentioned. He's been recommended to look at the "chineseway" programme of study in Shenyang. How is it possible to avoid the dodgy ones?

Mainly by doing as much research as possible on the internet including any forums specialising in that area of work.

Check Dave's ESL Cafe: that used to be a useful forum, including country specific sections.
