Pensions in probation

I worked for my local council for a 6 month probationary period and then my job role was no longer needed. During this time I contributed close to £900 and they contributed almost £1800...
Where does this money go or is there any way in which I can claim at least my contributions back? It seems stupid to have this when I'm going to be working for the next 40 years!
Thanks
