Casual Employee - Holiday Pay?

  • I think Marcus has returned.
  • Hi, wondered if anyone could help here please?!

My son worked for a security firm last year on a casual basis, some weeks for 20 hours, some for 50 hours, some none, he worked from May until September, he then worked for another company from November to January but is still on the security firms books and they have his P45, last October he asked about holiday pay and they said they paid out twice a year, July and January, he didn't get any holiday pay this January so asked again and now has been told that he was mistaken and their holiday year runs from April to April and they only pay out in July. Seems a long time to me to wait for holiday pay and I wondered if it is correct that they only pay out once a year.
    Thanks,
    Linda

  • I'm on the payroll of a firm, but only work there as needed - most weeks, but anything between 4 & 10 hours. I've got a rolling calculation going on with my hours to date (their holiday year ends in March) against the full time hours for a year times the number of days of full-time staff holidays, gives me my accrued holiday days. I then take the holiday pay in arrears. I'm lucky as they let me do my own calculation, and they accept it - but against that they're lucky that I'm prepared to work very variable hours...

The security firm policy seems a bit strange - especially as they seem to have moved the goalposts. Could he ask for confirmation in writing, plus a statement of what he is due?
