Many use ONS figures for expenditure and the media hype about eating only beans on toast for three months on the run-up to a mortgage application was largely that - hype.
Brokers have plenty of options for those who have reasonable lifestyles. If you want to go to HSBC or Yorkshire BS, that's upto you. You will have to jump through their varied and oft-changing hoops...
Which lenders don't require statements?
There is also the varying treatment of pension contributions - some take them fully into account like HSBC and Barclays, others dont like RBS/Natwest and others like Nationwide make assumptions. In the calculators some ask you to include gym membership and some don't.
Oddly you might think prudent people saving for a pension and keeping fit and healthy might be seen as good bets - but not with all lenders. Because of course you are going to put gym visits and pension payments before keeping a roof over your head. Would be nice if they could standardise policies.0
