volunteering at charity shop and manager trying to possibly 'push' me out.

  • Thanks, I intend to. Just hate being ignored for all my efforts and I guess just feel silly and useless when he gives people with less experience the jobs requiring more skills as if I can't do them when I really think I can and have proven I can.

One time the other manager left me to run the shop by myself and I managed fine.
I don't think it's a personality clash as such as he seems to be deliberately not training me, giving me boring things to do

You might not clash with him but he has something against you!

Why can't the other manager train you in the necessary areas and sign you off?
  • You are a volunteer - take your time and your effort to another store where they will appreciate you.

I have to say though that the manager is showing signs of not trusting you - could it be because of the incident where you left the cash in the till instead of putting it in the safe?

Are you giving off vibes of not being confident? Appearing nervous or hesitant?

You really just need to ask the manager why you are being treated differently - don't be aggressive or confrontational - just approach him with your concerns.

You might be surprised by his feedback.

Yes, I said similar to myself today. It's as if he doesn't trust me. Yes, I left the money in the till but I wasn't trained to do the cashing up anyway, because he wouldn't show me. The money was still secure. Plus, I had an emergency with my son at the hospital understandly I was under alot of stress. The shop was secure and locked and the manager was in the next day and I rang to let her know. She was ok with this. But who knows what they say to each other when I'm not around.
Maybe he really did have an issue with this after all. Shame really, as I was trying to help them out they would have lost £100 pound that day if I hadn't of been for me opening the shop.

Thank you for your input. It kinda confirmed what I thought.
  • I guess he wasn't happy about the manager 'telling him off' about my lack of training as I had been 'stressed' about the till playing up on the day I was opening the shop. Thing is I wasn't stressed about that, it was that my son had been admitted to hospital and I had little notice and had to close the shop and do the till in about 20 minutes. I think that could be one possible reason he may not like me, as I told him I was fine on the till.. which I was. Until it decided to play up on me. But it is an old till so it happens. Doesn't mean I can't operate it because I can do sales and stuff on it. But if the other manager has possibly mentioned I needed more training on it he's probably thinking 'why did she say she could do it?'

The other manager is rarely there, she is an area manager so has other shops to attend to I guess she expects him to do train volunteers as he is the manager.

Volunteering and don't like it? Leave. Life is too short to be miserable doing something that millions of people get paid to do for free.

  • Thanks everyone for the replies. I have got an application for another charity shop in my area. I will continue to apply for jobs as well as I suppose any experience is still experience. Going to update my CV as well.

The person who said 'life is too short' is right. I volunteer there, if the manager can't see my worth I will go else where where I am appreciated.

I still think you need to have a conversation with the manager so that you can see his perspective on the situation.

Then you have some feedback to work with for your own development.

As you're leaving anyway you have nothing to lose and the feedback may provide something useful for when you start somewhere else.
