Being chased for credit card debt that has been paid in full

My son had a credit card debt with Capital One. I paid it in full for him as he was being threatened with legal action by county court for a debt of £1800, which with the fees was £1930. We paid a company called Weightmans.com in oct 2015for the £1930 (i have the bank statement).

This week a company called Ruthbridge Ltd has phoned my son demanding payment of the original £1800. We sent them the copy of the bank statement showing £1930 paid, but they refuse to accept this as proof that the debt is paid. We contacted Weightmans by phone but they refuse to get involved or give us any information that could help to satisfy Ruthbridge Ltd.

What can we do to stop this nonsense? and resolve this so that my son does not get chased for this debt again. We dont have any of the original paperwork, or even know what the credit card number was. Where do we start to untangle all of this? its a nightmare.

Any help and advice greatly appreciated
