Council tax debt 2003-04

Today, my wife has received a letter from a debt collection company in reference to apparent outstanding Council Tax debts dating back to 2003-04. This was before we got together and for another rented property.

I read online that maybe debt over 6 years ago is unable to be chased or is no longer valid. Is this right? We live in Scotland.

Just need to know where we stand before responding or not. Read something about Statute Barred but unsure what this is or whether it applies for us.

Council Tax in England doesn't become statute barred and I imagine the same is in Scotland. (A quick Google says they are not). Normal consumer debt becomes statute barred after 5 years without payment or acknowledgement in Scotland normally.


If you owe the money, you'll need to get this sorted ASAP. Seek advice from the CAB if you need help.
