Grotty bath and slow emptying sink

Hi chums ,a quick couple of questions
1. the second bathroom that DGS use in their house is really grotty DD and OH use their en suite or the downstairs bathroom so often don't check to see what the spare bath at the top of the house is like .I did this afternoon and to say it needs sandblasting :) is an understatement .They have a very ringed bathtub , boys never think to rinse it round so I need some inspiration to get the soap scum off :)

2. My kitchen sink seems to be a bit slow at emptying down the drain and as its got a plastic sink trap underneath I was a bit worried about what I can chuck down there to get it a bit more free flowing. Don't really want to call the plumber in if I can help it Its not blocked just takes awhile to empty.

any ideas would be welcome

Cheers

3 tablespoons of Bicarb of soda over the plug hole then a good glug of vinegar. It'll bubble away then flush with hot water afterwards...

    1. Mould and Mildew cleaner should be good. Or just dilute some bleach as it's pretty much that.

    2. Have you got a hose outside? If so just unscrew the trap and give it a blast from the hose to clean out. They can become pretty manky after a while and the only way to get a ghood clean is to take it off. Or if you are squeamish buy a new one, will be a few quid in B&Q!

JackieO as mother of two boys I can empathise re the bath rings. Best was I found was to pop a couple of scoops of laundry powder (biological) and some bleach in the bath fill it as high as you can and leave to steep ideally overnight. Empty and wash with one of the nylon scubby things or an old body exfoliator net. Regarding your sink - have you tried soda crystals? A mound of these in the plug hole flushed with boiling water tends to clear any gunk - if that doesn't help could be worth a good prod down the plug hole with a dismantled wire coathanger.

Jackie Any of the above or what I do regularly to prevent blocks or build up . Washing soda crystals followed by a few kettles of boiling water . Works like magic and nontoxic .

If they don't mind the bathroom temporarily smelling like the local chippy (!) a very good way to get rid of soap scum residue is to get some cheap salt, and some Happy Shopper white vinegar. Spray the vinegar onto the bath, put the salt onto a scourer and scrub away. Rinse with water to reveal a shiny 'as new' bathtub. I do this from time to time, as our bath often doesn't get rinsed after use.

If the traditional remedies for unblocking the sink don't work, HG make a drain unblocker, which may well do the trick.

I would try the soda crystals first, as the HG looks to be quite potent!

I would go with Viakal for the bath. It isn't cheap but I firmly believe in saving money by buying the correct item for the job in hand. It works and my time is worth it as well.

It has worked on mine in the past.

I'd second the washing powder for cleaning the bath, and I also use it to keep sinks running clear. Glug of bleach down the plughole followed by a measure of biological powder, washed down with a kettleful of boiling water.

Another vote for soda crystals to clear the sink; we found that it worked better than bought drain cleaner. I also put some down each sink, followed by a kettle of boiling water, about once a month to keep everything free flowing.
