I work as a temp through an employment agency for a public sector employer in Scotland. My contract is for 5 months.

I asked the agency If I'd be able to get a bike through the Cycle to Work Scheme and they said No. Just wondered if this is right? Do you have to be a permanent member of staff?

Your contract must last as long as the salary sacrifice lasts, which is 12 months. Your contract is only 5 months so you are not eligible to take part.

If you are free lance can can't you claim on your self assessment form, for the number of miles that you have cycled to work, and this helps towards your bike?

A temporary employee isn't the same thing as a freelance - and a freelancer couldn't claim if they are working on a self-employed basis (need to have an employer for the scheme to apply).
