Student loan question on new job form

A bit confused on this question for my new job. They are asking 'Do you have a student loan which is not fully repaid?' I did have student loans when I was at university I know I don't need to pay it back unless I earn a certain amount which is not going to happen since I'm not going to earn that amount in this job. So should I answer no for the question?

From you've said it's a 'yes'. If you're below the threshold then your employer just won't make the deductions.

It's purely so that when you get over the threshold payroll / it know to start the payments. They shouldn't pay until then. I've never had problems before.

It's a weird question though to be asking!

In any case hmrc notifies the employer to make deductions from the employee's salary - we had a case where we'd received such notification for an employee who earned less than the threshold. On querying it hmrc said it was so we ticked the box on the payroll software so that when he did earn more, the deduction would be made automatically.

No. Don't second guess the reason they are asking a particular question.

As its a generic application form, they will ask it as people who earn above the threshold have to pay back via their payroll. this is something that will trigger a certain procedure within the payroll department.

If you answer 'No' to a question when the answer should be 'yes' and your company find out, they may well look into what other questions you have been untruthful about and it could jeopardise your employment.
