I sacked a member of staff a few years ago for dodging his tube fair, and reported him to the FCA, so he won't work in finance again. Honesty matters still to a lot of people.

Purloin a bit of the payroll department's semi-skimmed and get sacked for it?

They were boasting about it on an electronic chat, and as their manager I have to review every line of these chats.
It was the gloating as much as the fraud itself that got them into trouble. Had they been in trouble with money, or running late with a damaged ticket machine or the like they'd have probably been allowed to argue their case, but their attitude was that only fools paid the fare if it could be avoided.
I can't have someone like that trading financial products, and couldn't in good conscience allow them to do it anywhere else either.
I know that it feels harsh, but I need people's first and last instinct when they notice a loophole in our systems to be to report it and work to fix it, not to think "how can I use this to extract money".0 -

Never done it myself but worked a few places where it happened regularly , especially with drinks. It was annoying but I sort of viewed it as being similar to my flat sharing days - I think some people just thought 'they're my colleagues , I can take their juice ...'
Definitely wrong but still think GROSS misconduct is a bit harsh
I once worked with someone who stole a printer , shredder and chair, they were quite blatant as well, got away with it because of the politics of the place0 -

wow, what an idiot, yeah in that case he deserves it. no idea why people insist on using those chat facilities (we have it too), i keep it strictly business as i know it is monitored. not that i have anything to hide but still.0 -

Me too. I think this is a generational thing. Young people today have grown up in the habit of posting everything from their breakfast to their genitals online , I think a lot of them simply have no understanding of the difference between public and private0 -

I mean I've ditched other people's half drunk drink bottles before now who just dumped it on my desk when they can't somehow make it to the bin. Though saying that we are meant to have a 'clear desk' policy.
Sameish goes for the fridge which host some of the mankykiest left overs going at times but when the Supervisor decides to go through they just ditch anything which presents out of date, other places I've worked come end of week it'll be copped for you if you've not taken steps to remove from company fridge - does your company not have any rules in place?0
