Hi there,
I moved overseas in May 2014 and closed my account with First Utility. Since then I've not received any further communication from them until yesterday when I received an email from Credit Resource Solutions telling me I owe £199.23.
I have asked for them to send meter readings as I don't believe this to be true, but is there anything else I can do?
Thanks
Alasdair

If they prove you owe the money? No, not really. Of course they likely wont chase you overseas for such an amount, it would remain on your credit file in the UK and any action taken like a CCJ would be live for 6 years in case you return.
If they can't prove the monies owed, tell them to go away, which they will.

Thanks for the advice - I have asked for meter readings, cost breakdown and payments made. I have the meter readings from when I moved out, so let's see if the marry up.
In addition I've been away for 3 years already, and am not returning for the foreseeable future, and certainly won't be returning in the next 3 years. So that will be over 6 years in total.0 -
Hi Alasdair
You sound well organised if you still have your final meter readings. Hopefully this will be enough to resolve the matter and show there is no further liability.
If you remain dissatisfied with First Utility you can make a complaint and escalate it to the Energy Ombudsman https://www.ombudsman-services.org/sectors/energy. Ask Credit Resource Solutions to put the debt on hold while the dispute is being dealt with.
With regards to your credit file, StopIt is correct. If at any point they obtained a CCJ it would remain on your credit file for 6 years from the date it was made, not from when the date the debt was due.
