slow cooker or le creuset in oven

Options
Should I get a slow cooker? I like slow cooked food, but was thinking that a Le Creuset (which I already own) in a very low oven would be better, because the pan is so much thicker.

What temperature can you slow cook at in an oven?

  • Hello! I have a gas Rayburn in my kitchen. During the cooler months it's on low (gas 1-2) all the time, to take the chill of the kitchen. I use it as a slow cooker, with Le Creuset casserole dishes - pasta sauces, casseroles, soups, etc.

I then have a regular SC for the warmer months.

    Hi there

I do use the slow cooker when im having a major cook up and am out of oven space.. but i love things done in my le creuset in a low oven... seems to have more taste...i leave mine on as low as possible for ages...but im usually around to keep an eye on things...SC can just be left to their own devices for a lot of the time...

Using the oven on low is really good - but better (in terms of money saving) if you can fill the oven (whereas the SC is designed to heat one dish). I have a little paperback printed in 1968 called "leave it to cook" by Stella Aterbury which has lots of good ideas for how to fill an oven, as well as recipes which work equally well in a SC.
I have found the book for sale second hand on this site:
