Boiler repaired - ten days later not working again

Hi, looking for some advice/opinions.
Our combi boiler stopped producing hot water about 10 days ago showing a fan/flue fault on the LEDS.
We called a plumber who replaced the fan, tested the replacement was working then left. I think (my partner paid) we paid about £400.
Now the boiler has developed the same symptoms. The company will return to examine.
From the noises they're making if the fan replacement is problematic that's under warranty. So no problem. But they also spoke of "underlying" problems, which might result in a new quote.
I guess my question is this: we didn't pay them to replace the fan - we paid them to correctly diagnose the problem then fix that problem. So if they fixed the wrong problem (at fairly high cost) can we push to have the uneccessary work deducted, or was fitting a new fan a necessary part of getting to the real problem?

I don't think anyone can say for sure without competently examining the boiler. As you summarise, it depends on whether fitting the new fan was a necessary part of getting to the real problem.0

Raise it with the plumber, but you're unlikely to be unable to prove anything without someone examining the boiler. I recommend https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk for an independent person to examine the boiler. Buy With Confidence is a trader approval scheme run by Trading Standards.
