Two jobs

I'm a university student who has recently accepted a casual worker job at university. This job starts on the 30th of June 2017 and is on a casual basis, so they offer work and I accept whatever I wish to work. It will probably end up being an afternoon a week from September 2017 onwards. I was told to fill out a form for HM Revenue & Customs so that the university could work out my tax code. As I had a job last summer, I ticked that I'd had a job and that this was now my only job. I was then asked to send in my P45 from my last job. However, I've since accepted a summer job which I am due to start on the 12th of June 2017. The company sent me the same HM Revenue & Customs form that I had for university and asked me to fill it out. I'm just confused as to whether I tick that I have another job or that this is my only job, as I am not due to officially start the casual university job until 30th of June 2017. I'm also unsure about who I'm supposed to send my P45 to, the university or the company? The university also said I have to update my tax details between each afternoon of work that I accept with them, I'm not sure if this changes anything.

I'm just a bit unsure with how it works as I'm due to start my job with the company first and then start my casual worker contract a few weeks into the first one. If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.

You can only give your P45 to one employer, I'd suggest the summer job one as you'll be starting that first (it's not entirely clear when you start the Uni job as you mention 30th June and September as start dates). As you won't have a P45 to give to the Uni you'll need to complete a New Starter Checklist, but that may well put you on the wrong tax code. What you should do once you've started both jobs is contact HMRC, explain it to them, and ask them to split you tax code between the two jobs so that you (hopefully) don't pay tax on either. After you finish the summer job you might need to speak to HMRC again to get them to change your tax code on the Uni job to your full allowance.

If you haven't worked since last summer, then neither employer will want your P45 as it relates to last tax year not the current one.

Each should ask you to complete a New Starter Checklist or some such. With the job you start first you say it's your only or main job, then for the second job it won't be.

However, unless you want to pay 20% tax on job 2 and reclaim any overpayment later, you need to work out roughly how much tax you'll be due to pay in each job. Once you've done that, you can phone HMRC and ask them to split your tax codes between the two jobs so that each has some personal allowance applied to it.

    .

Use of a P45 that is dated before the current tax year is a little more complicated than this. In most cases for a P45 showing a leaving date of 2016/2017 tax year and used for a job starting up to 25 May of this tax year the new employer will use the tax code on the P45, (after increasing it 50) and ignores any pay and tax details. If they start after 25 May all details are ignored and the current emergency tax code on a non-cumulative basis is used.
For P45s before 2016/2017 the starter declaration is required.

    To check for all codes....
