HMRC fine

in Cutting tax
Morning
I hope someone can help.
I submitted my self assessment on 30th Jan and received a receipt by email. I had no tax to pay. I deleted it by accident and can't retrieve it.
I have just received a letter saying that I have not submitted and that I need to pay a fine of £100.
I called and the lady I spoke to wasn't v helpful. I am sure she has many people calling and saying the same thing all the time.
She said to go in and submit my tax, pay the fine and then appeal afterwards.
I have 2 text messages from HMRC with login codes for their gateway system in Jan when I submitted and am wracking my brains of how I can prove that I did do it.
Hoping someone out there has a bright idea about how I can prove my innocence!
Thanks in advance for your help
J

What does it say when you log in and check your self assessment records?0

Hi. It says I have part filled in my tax return but all sections are ticked. I've now clicked and submitted. Maybe I hadn't done this in Jan, in which case I am a numpty but I am positive I did.0

I suspect that you're right that you didn't actually submit it, but even if you did not having the receipt will make it difficult to prove. When I had to submit a return I always downloaded the submitted version which includes the receipt number as extra proof that I'd done it.0

I did similar to you a few years ago, was absolutely sure I had downloaded it all correctly and I would not back down. The lady from HMRC i talked to gave me a number for their IT department and I spoke to them. They were able to see what I had done and gave me a code which I had to write in quoting and I would get my fine refunded, which I did.0

If you filed at the end of January you probably did submit it, but it probably took so long to do it that it bombed out (that's a technical term!). Their systems are slow at the best of times but at the end of January - doomed to failure. So did that thing keep swirling (that's another technical term) if it did, there is your answer!0

If the form fails to send (e.g. due to a validation error), you get a submission number and email anyway, even though it never submitted. The email does say it didn't submit, but it can easily be overlooked.
This happened to me for this year, where the form wouldn't let me enter a value in a specific box because I'd used the CGT worksheet. But the worksheet never updated this box either. Validation passed, but the form wouldn't submit. Had to go back and fill in this section without the worksheet.0
