I have found that all three are offering fee free remortgae product 1.59% and the same svr so im not sure who to go for, i know that first direct have won lots of awards but i am leaning towards nationwide. Any other thoughts and experiences out there?

Nationwide all the way for me.
I bank with Nationwide, I find them really good, but I am considering a mortgage with the Coventry BS, because they are cheaper.

I just applied for a mortgage and found that HSBC and First Direct were slightly cheaper than Nationwide over the fixed period with everything factored in. However, my mortgage adviser told me not to touch them with a barge pole as they are bad at dealing with mortgages, e.g. unresponsive and slow. My situation is different to yours of course so the advice might not be the same, but the advice I was given was that Nationwide are worth paying slightly more for over the period of the fix to avoid the hassle factor.
Good luck0 -
I can only say really positive things about First Direct on the basis of just going through a remortgage with them.
I must have changed my application a couple of times after receiving the offer letter (term of fix, deposit amount) and they dealt with it very quickly.
Overpayments can be taken directly out of your account and you can make unlimited overpayments without penalty (unless paying off balance in full).0 -
I have a mortgage with Nationwide and they have been very decent in the numerous times I have dealt with them -- additional borrowing for house renovations, switching rates, etc. I left HSBC as a bank several years ago because their current/savings products are not competitive, however do not have a complaint against them as far as customer service is concerned (this would be only for bank accounts, mind you, not mortgages though).0

I couldn't have had a more different experience!
You'll never catch me ditching FD for anything unless it's exceptional - and a couple of hundred quid switching bonus gets no where close..0 -
I'm in the middle of getting a mortgage.
I applied online at HSBC and saved it. When I logged in the next day I got an error. Went to the branch and the way they organise seeing people is a shambles. Gave up there.
Nationwide seem much better. I was able to complete the application process with them, at least.
I've also been looking at First Direct but the reviews on Trustpilot are very poor. I think I'm right in saying that the mortgages are actually through HSBC so I won't bother with them.0 -
I just think HSBC/First Direct are picky and do a lot of processing 'by the book' - so if you have dodgy credit, don't bank with them or are picking an unusual property situation, then they will more than likely not want to know.0

Don't go with HSBC.
Currently in the process and they're a nightmare. Go through everything with a fine tooth comb. Even asked me how much I would spend on TV packages when I live in the property. Take 1 week to respond to any query. Not worth the hassle0 -
Nationwide might be quicker than FD. FD were very fiddly when we re-mortgaged but came good in the end. They seemed much slower than Nationwide who we've also used. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
