Making a wool jumper less itchy?

Options
I bought a lovely wool jumper in a charity shop, but it has a polo neck and it is so itchy!
Does anyone have any secrets to make it less itchy? I've tried fabric conditioner but it didn't make a difference :(

I loved a mohair jumper pattern some years ago, but having sensitive skin, made it up in a mohair mix, but it just wasn't the same lovely hairy rainbow-coloured thing, so I made a mohair version and wore a T shirt underneath-problem solved. (You can get high necked, roll necked and long sleeved Tshirts).

I have a friend who swears by soaking her jumpers in a weak solution of hair conditioner and warm water. You have to do it every time you wash the jumper.

The problem is caused by one of two things: the coarseness of the wool used (it can range from very fine like Blue Faced Leicester to quite coarse) or, on double coated breeds, guard hairs being spun into the yarn.
