Paying back Occupational Maternity Pay

Hi.
I am currently on maternity and am not returning to work as my husband got a new job and we have moved out of the area. I know I have to pay back the enhanced pay but my work is asking for it gross rather than net.
Is this normal? I have the net to pay them back but as I obviously never recived the gross (tax, Ni) I dont have it to return.
Thanks

I think the idea is that you repay the gross, and the tax and NI that you originally paid is refunded through the PAYE system, probably showing up on your P45 as some sort of credit. If you then get another job in this tax year you'll get the overpayment back through your new employer, otherwise you'd need to ask HMRC to repay it direct.

I agree. It's gone over a tax year, so they can't adjust the figures themselves, I believe.

You do have to return the gross. The company paid the gross plus employers national insurance for you. The tax is between you and the tax man, the employees NI will be lost but will count towards your government pension.

Check on the Cutting Tax Forum with the accountants there whether the tax repayment can be reclaimed from the hmrc.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!
