Hi all,

Due to long term illness my wife stopped working at the end of December, I've just been online and filled out a form P50 without realising that since we are in the new tax year she now has to claim by writing a letter.

Does anyone have any idea how long (on average) these take to come through, and would anyone care to make a rough guess as to how much she may get back, based on total payment in 16/17 of £17,842 and total tax paid of £1917?

TIA

James

    Thanks for replying.

Assuming no taxable income (which would include any taxable benefits)
    17842 less 11000 is 6842
    20% of 6842 is 1368.40
tax paid 1917 less 1368.40 is 548.60 or thereabouts.

As a MSE convert you need to be encouraging her to be earning some interest via all the high(!) interest current account available.

And would you benefit if she applied for Marriage Allowance for this current tax year, 2017:18?

    Thanks Chrisbur.

Dazed and Confused, I'm not a basic rate taxpayer. Thanks anyway.

If I am able to I answer the question that is asked. I am happy to leave it to others to offer advice and opinions.
