Does your DS's school have any after school clubs? My DD's school offer 3 different sporting clubs which are a good way to slip in exercise in a fun way.

They have 1 sport one I think but I have never had any details about signing up for it. He has completed all his swimming levels and did cricket in the summer but wasn't that interested in it. The ideal thing would be if there was an after school club for his sport either with the club or school because he loves it but only does it once a week during the season.

Bear in mind that losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise. But more exercise is always good for a multitude of reasons, including good mental health :).

I agree HHoD. His diet is my main concern but would benefit from being more active as would DH and I. DH is overweight but it is the rubbish he eats at work (and beer) that is his issue where as I am in the healthy weight range. I'm near the top but still in it!;)

  • Hey XS,
I think if you'd seen my son at 8 he would have been classed as "heavy" - I have to say I encouraged him to take up sport in and out of school and kept healthy stuff in the house for snacking etc. I encouraged healthy eating habits and shared how to read a food/ingredients label whilst saying "a banana has no added ingredients so is the best choice" - he takes the mickey out of me now when he chooses fruit saying "no label on here Mum, must be safe to eat" hahahaha

My son is now over 6 feet tall and is like a lat. He is unaware of his weight (in a good way) and has lots of body confidence.

My parents were always "oh a little treat won't hurt" with both of my children but they'd grown up with post-war austerity and thought they were being kind. Having said that my son was made two poached eggs on toast yesterday by his Grandma and he raved about them! My Mum loves fussing and cooking for her now adult Grandchildren.

You can only set a good example and teach him all the good stuff without giving him a complex. Sounds like you are doing exactly that.

Thanks for your post Working Mum.

We are on holiday from tomorrow so lots of walking, swimming and running around at kids club for DS. I will steer him away from the pancakes and chocolate sauce everyday and towards the fruit ;)

DMIL came from a poor background and DFIL spent many years of DH childhood out of work. They are probably better off now then they have ever been and definitely use food and gifts to show love (and control unfortunately in MIL case). DMIL can't cook and DFIL used to work in a kitchen and can make pies and all sorts but doesn't. Their kitchen is miniscule.

I haven't managed to get through my list and still have the travel insurance to arrange and DS flip flops to find! Most of mine and DS packing is done and DH can sort himself out in the morning. He always leaves it to the last minute.

See you all next Sunday x

We are back from a fabulous week away. We enjoyed it so much we are considering going again next year at the same time but only if we can get a free kids place like this year which are currently not on offer. We did go a bit over budget paying for a couple of experiences but made some fabulous memories.

DH has been paid including his lovely bonus :) He has had some pension payments back dated that I hadn't budgeted for but it is still a lovely sum to receive.

The mortgage has been delayed and I have to admit it is my fault for not sending back a form they had requested in their original pack. I do wonder how long I would have been waiting if I hadn't rang them as they hadn't chased me for it. It's a good job we have the 2 bonuses this month as we have to pay all our debt payments this month and most of the CCs (except the big one we are not paying off) are now interest bearing. The good news I suppose is that all the balances are lower so there should be enough, along with the bonus this month, to cover last months spending and clear the card in full, Christmas, fill the small EF, start the big EF off, start the holiday savings and finish decorating the guest room ready for the Christmas visitors. Oh and we have also bought the materials to repair the shed.

I have started DS Christmas shopping with some books. We have also decided on what we are getting him and have agreed to keep the budget lower this year. At 8 I still expect my DS to ask for toys but he has asked for a gaming PC (no chance), beats headphones and a new outfit! He's still a little boy in many ways though as he loved the character hand puppet we bought him on holiday.

We have had a word with DH parents about DS diet and will monitor his weight every couple of weeks. He asked for a sandwich and some fruit for dinner last night having had a meal with vegetables for lunch with DPIL.

I have plans to share about what we will be doing saving and debt busting wise once the mortgage has gone through but am holding off until it has definitely gone through so i don't jinx it!:rotfl:

Woo hoo mortgage should go through on Monday :D I am soooo looking forward to clearing the debt and closing the accounts and having an emergency fund.

DH has 'borrowed' some of the bonus to sign up for the 6 week diet and exercise plan again this week as he has put some of the weight back on since starting this new job. He will get the money refunded in December when he has lost the weight. I am going to follow along with it a bit to see if I can lose some more too.

Good meeting with the client this week and I'm feeling positive about next year, there may even be an opportunity coming up in the client company which would be a good fit for me.

We are planning our first family park run on Saturday. DS has a match on Sunday and we have tickets for a firework display Sunday evening at the same club. Apart from a food shop we will be having a quiet weekend scaling the Himalayas of the ironing piles and having a really good tidy up.
