I've had a read through of your other thread and just wanted to say that milk is 99p in Icyland - 10p less than elsewhere if you have one handy. And I bought spices in packets too the other day - 80p from the world foodie bit insainz. Though I can't say if they're comparable quantities.

    I know it's only a few pennies, but it may help s t r e t c h your £70 :D.

I'm going to have a go at a gf/dfversion of the impossible cake this weekend!

I bought chilli powder in the packets from the world food aisle recently and it was so hot we couldn't eat it!

There is an I-land near DPIL so I could get some when I pick up DS, thanks for the tip.

A GF version of that cake is definitely going on my list!

We have really enjoyed our quiet day today. Even though it has felt like we have done nothing I have cooked and baked and DH has done 2 small DIY jobs. He has spray painted the extractor fan cover and it has come up brilliantly. He has applied the window film to the utility window side ways as this is the way the roll could fit but it's bamboo so it looks like its growing sideways. Good job its just the utility room!

Took my old boy out for a short walk this afternoon. We took him out for an hour last weekend with my Dad’s 3-year-old dog and then to DS match the following day and he was wrecked for 2 days. He is 13.5 now and it’s catching up with him. He certainly sleeps more than he used to.

Watched some of the winter Olympics and the Rugby. DS and DH found they could play against each other on the play station so that kept them busy for a little while and then DS and I cooked up a storm in the kitchen using up a fair bit from the cupboards, fridge and freezer. There are meals to go back in for DH lunches and some scones and flapjack for snacks. I still have a couple of bits to make tomorrow.

DH and DS had their KFC as promised and I faked a GF version for myself from the contents of the freezer.

It looks like DH training is cancelled tomorrow due to a waterlogged pitch so we may drive up to our favourite NT place for a walk as it is on our list of things to do this month. There is a little left in the family fun budget for a cuppa in the caf! ;)

    Three Frugal Things

    1) Only bought the milk and apples we needed in Aldi
    2) DH loved the 85p/bottle cider from Aldi so will be buying this again
    3) Made vegan chilli, scones and flapjacks from store cupboard ingredients. The chilli and scones are super cheap recipes, the flapjack not so much due to price of GF oats but they are super tasty and wont last long :D

I think anything gluten free (Or any other 'free from' variety) is more expensive. We don't really eat shop bought bread and things now simply because of the cost :o Most other things I can work around but it is annoying.

Hope you manage to get out for your walk tomorrow :)

  • My impossible pie nearly failed...! Probably because I baked it in a 2 pint(?) silicone loaf tin. It had 90 mins by which time I figured that if it wasn't cooked, then it would never be cooked. After cooling time, I was amazed at how tasty it was - so was dh! It didn't quite look like the pic on the web page :rotfl:. Next time, I'll make it with just half the quantities, less sugar and maybe throw in some raisins and cinnamon.

I also whipped up a 1-egg fairy cake mix for dd which she has decorated with lurid green icing + 1 small pink marshmallow.

Do you bake your own GF bread or do without? I know you and the kiddos like baking; is all your baking GF?

That's a long time to cook it. I will follow your lead and make half quantities as it may not get eaten if it's too big. There has been lots of lovely ideas for puddings and cakes on the other thread. I wish DH had a sweet tooth as I end up making them and eating them all myself :o

The picture I have of Impossible Pie shows something more quiche-shaped. I have this old version (which I haven't tried) from about 1980-something:

4 eggs (it says size 3 which I think is medium)
    2oz (50g) margarine
    6oz (175g) caster sugar
    3oz (75g) plain flour
    1/4 tsp (1,25ml) salt
    1/2 tsp (2.5ml) baking powder3/4 pt (400ml) milk
    4oz (100g) desiccated coconut
    1tsp (5ml) vanilla flavouring

    1. Grease and 8 in (20.5cm) pie dish. Set oven 350F, 180C (Mark 4).
    2. Place all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth. An electric whisk can also be used.
    3. Pour into the pie dish and bake for about an hour. When done, a knife inserted into the centre should come out clean.
    4. As pie cooks, it forms a crust on the bottom, a custard filling and a coconut topping!

So there you go: it was the loaf tin's fault!

ETA: the original says it serves 8, takes ten minutes to prepare, an hour to cook and costs 70p!!... and "When things seem impossible, this is the pudding to bake!"

  • 99% of our things are GF, along with dairy/soya free for everything. The only time 'normal' flour etc is used is if it's for other people/school etc because its cheaper :rotfl:

Only youngest has allergies, but its so much easier for everything to be 'safe'
