P60 Error

After my tax credit payment reducing considerably I phone then today to find put what was happening. They said they had received my husband earnings from the inland revenue and it had calculated an over payment. We were expecting this so that was ok. We then started to go through the renewal process and I gave him the gross earning to date from our march payslip I was then told they had a different figure which is £1700 higher.

Now I have gone through all his wage slips and the amounts that have gone in the bank from his company and they all tally with the figure I have. Now his company is completely useless with things like this and regularly mess up his wages and we have to spend 2 wks explaining to them and bugging them to eventually get what he is owed each month so it is not surprising if they have messed up.

What do I do if they start dragging their heels with getting this sorted will we be able to go to the tax office with our wage slips and bank statements to get it amended. Obviously once our tax credits are completed for 2016/2017 we wont able to get it changed so we lose out on last year as our over payment will be to high and this year as they will be working out on to higher a wage

Do you actually have the P60 yet? It'll be a lot easier to resolve this if you do have it and can establish why there is a difference from what you were expecting.

If you have an online personal tax account, you should be able to see each month's pay reported to HMRC. You can match this up to the payslips to see where the difference is.

    Process:

    1. Ask the company if they have completed their end of tax year process for 2016-17.

    2. If not, ask them to re-do month 12 so the full year figure is right and then re-submit.

    3. If they have, ask them to put through an end of year update correcting 2016-17.

    4. If they refuse to play ball, your main line of attack is to make it clear this will be finding its way onto a desk in HMRC. Anyone mucking up payroll will wish to avoid this at all costs.
