Job opportunity - please help

Hi

I am hoping someone can advise me what to do here. I am a qualified member of staff who works for a financial company in scotland. They are a large financial company whom I have been with since September. I had teething problems to begin with. I was in a team/project that I did not like and felt my skills were not relevant to what I wanted to do. I spent from September to March in this role in the team. I asked to be moved to a different team during a spell whereby I got to work with them and really enjoyed what i did. I was moved on the basis/word that I would be here for the long term. Now I have had an offer of an interview elsewhere with an established company specialising in my field. I have not accepted nor denied the offer but it is tempting. I also have to take a day off to make this interview (its an all day thing). I feel a bit stuck as I did say I would stay long term if I moved to the team im in because I enjoy it (although I do not agree with their policies of feedback and what have you), however I do not want to miss the opportunity here. I also do not want to p**** my boss off for doing so. Would they give a bad reference? what would you do in my shoes? if i was offered the job it would be 4 weeks notices kinda thing, but i feel like I have betrayed him if that makes sense.

Thank you very much in advance this is my first thread!

In my experience you have to put what YOU want first. Companies can promise the world, but then something happens to stop things. Do what is best for you - saying you will stay long term is a bit like a company saying that your job will go on for years - who knows??
  • yes thats very true. I just dont want to be 'that' person you know. admittedly im a bit of a job hopper and i do enjoy my job just now, but as i say i dont enjoy their feedback policies. hence why its putting me off just now. its a great opportunity for me to expand etc. i dont want to burn bridges i guess thats what im saying lol

A bit of a job hopper? How many jobs in the last 5 years?

Do what's best for you. No job is guaranteed and companies can pretty much find a reason to get rid of people, so if this were me I'd feel little loyalty. You haven't been there long either. They can't give you a bad reference just because you find another job.
In other words do what you really want not what you think your company wants.

Would echo the other replies here : do what's best for you first and foremost. As you are qualified, double-check your contract of employment to see what obligations you have when leaving the company.

3 in 5 so this is number 4 if you move?

Personally I'd see you as someone that would stay for 12-18 months max and move on...if that suited me then great, if not I'd look elsewhere.
