I called the post office and there is a form to fill out, its actually really simple (so feel stupid now! but we were clueless about this stuff) as long as the amount is under £10k you can get the funds sent to your bank account without solicitors.

That's great news! Heartening that that old institution, the Post Office, still knew what to do!
No need to feel stupid - better minds than ours get it wrong or put carts before the horse - we were advised (by a lawyer) we most likely needed to apply for probate even with the will, and a quote was goven to us for the work and we were invited to agree it. Then after making a few calls I recently discovered myself that we did not need to, and lawyer now agrees !0
