One thing that may be worth doing is making it clear that you're available for private work as well as company work, eg you do a good job of putting up shelves in the office, and Freda needs some shelves putting up at home so asks you to do it.

    Thanks all for your help!

    Another question...

When I registered online to be a sole trader, I received a letter from hmrc telling me they have registered me for self assessment and will contact me by letter after the 5th April when I need to do a tax return. I haven't received anyhting yet? Is this normal? Obviously I only registered in January this year so I haven't done any self assessments yet.
    Thanks,

Look to gain other clients asap, not for any sort of taxation issues but in the event of the one client you have starting to use someone else for the work in the future, loosing that client would be a 100% loss in income.

These are the two tests many fail, especially the first one where despite them claiming it is a self employed position you have a "manager" telling you how to do the job etc the same as every employee at the company you're doing work at.

When do I need to do a self assessment tax return? Do hmrc send a letter?
  • It isn't clear from your other posts exactly when your business started but if it was after 5 April 2016 and before 6 April 2017 then you need to do the self assessment return by 31 January 2018 (or October 2017 if using snail mail).

I registered self employed in January of this year.
So I will need to do one for the 2016 to 2017 tax year?
I just haven't received a letter telling me this...other people I know have
    Thanks,
