I bought some from my local market yesterday. They weren't as good as they used to be but were much better than the supermarket jerseys. They still had muck on them0

I wonder if the Jersey potato growers would like to see this thread on MSE ??
I agree with everything said above ........most awful potatoes ever.0 -

I don't see anyone else saying that. The consensus seems to be that they are unexceptional potatoes that do not justify their premium price. I have had far worse.0 -
Back in the day, we so looked forward to those few short weeks when Jerseys were available. We could never afford them though for the first couple of weeks, but once the price came down a little we had them once a week 'til the next year.
Has anybody else here seen this book? It's a revelation! Wish I could try them all.

Still available that way in Norfolk and Lincolnshire (probably parts of Yorkshire too) by the roadside, straight from the fields.
About ready now, and they'll be expensive - but if you manage to find some they'll be about the best potatoes you ever tasted. Like Jersey Royals used to be, but even better. An unforgettable flavour.0 -
Jersey Royals in plastic bags in Tescos - nooooo! They are already reduced to half price - perhaps people are at last getting the message (well, us 'oldies' anyway) that they just don't taste like Jerseys.0

Combination of plastic bags, mud washed off and supermarkets lights on all the time - even ones not open 24 hours are to blame. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

As I've explained before on this thread, that really isn't at the root (ho ho) of the problem. Plastic bagging doesn't help, and exposure to light will turn potatoes green. Having soil on a potato will help reduce its exposure to light, of course, and may have some small (very small) effect on flavour.
The real culprit, however, is in the way the potatoes are grown. Assuming the Jersey growers are still using the same seed stock (International Kidney- and all the indications are that they still do) - then as any farmer or home grower will tell you, what determines flavour it is the way they are grown - soil type, balance of fertiliser, origin and application rates, and whether they are grown under cover or in the open air.
My money is on the choice and type of fertilser.0 -
The Asda Jerseys were exactly the same as Aldi's.0
