Career Advice

Hey Folks,
Is there anyone on here who works within the waste management industry who can give some career advice?
I currently work with a small outfit as an operations controller. We collect effluent waste from welfare units/sump tanks on construction sites. I quite enjoy the work but now feel like they have taken on one too many people so there isn't enough work to go round.
I'm going back to uni part-time to hopefully finish my degree in business. However, I noticed a lot of waste management jobs at management level etc are looking for degrees in engineering or science based.
Is a career in this field worth following?
I'm just interested in seeing what my options are :-)
Thanks
Craig

Hi Craig
I work in the waste management industry - and have for a lot of years. I think it has a problem attracting people so can give better opportunities than you may imagine.
There are areas of work where engineering/ science qualifications are valuable or necessary, but most people I know in managerial positions don't have these. Learning about how the industry works on an end to end basis (and understanding themes such as the circular economy) can be useful. There are some quite useful groups on linkedin, and the Institute for Waste Management runs courses.
Whereabouts are you based/ looking for work?0 -
Is it just me that ROFL at this? (sorry

Maybe I've been listening to the News Quiz too much! :rotfl:Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
Hi JayRitchie,
Thanks for your response. It is actually quite good to know that engineering/science is not essential.
I sort of found waste management by accident as my original plan was to get into transport/distribution. I do quite enjoy what I do so I thought I'd like stay within the waste management industry.
I've actually been looking at joining the Chartered institute for waste management so might make contact with them and see how it goes.
I'm based in Broxburn, West Lothian and currently looking at the central belt of Scotland. Mostly between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Thanks

It made me think of the Sopranos.
Sorry OP. Nothing useful to add, but good luck with your career “I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0
