Advice please- Merseyside/Wirral relocation

Evening folks,
Looking for any local advice please.
Partner's just be offered a new job in Liverpool- very exciting but we're currently living in The South and don't know the area at all.
Hoping we can live somewhere where he can commute into work by bike/public transport. We'll be renting and I won't be working initially, staying at home to settle our toddler in for a good few months + is the plan.
Any ideas on which areas to look at or to avoid. Himself is quite taken with the idea of the Wirral, as long as he can get himself to the passenger ferry to commute. I'm pretty open tbh and am looking for any recommendations for places to explore.
