    Does this also apply if you 'Mark as Read' but don't actually open it?

    Nope . Only if the picture/pixel is actually displayed (downloaded from the server)

    No, but...

    Bear in mind that a lot of email clients show you a preview of the mail in a panel of the main UI. Previewing a message is just the same as opening it.

    Not 100%. The mail body could still contain malware which is run that leaves the PC vulnerable when back online.

    Open them yes - open attachments absolutely not

    Do people still use mail clients that automatically load images and execute scripted content? Is it time to revive the campaign for plain text email?

    talking of email security. i watched this yesterday and am amazed companies can get away with sticking a raspberry pi in a oversized plastic case, have a massive mark up and make false claims.

    Thunderbird's default setting is not to open external content it doesn't execute Javascript for a very long time. So it's pretty safe to open any email in there, as long as you don't click "Show remote content in this message".

    yes... an image tracker is provided. outlook has a no-load image feature which stops the tracking. but if i were you, i won't open any link on the mail either.
    iOS devices automatically download everything.. for ease of tracking :)
