making fish cakes

I have a box of mashed sweet potato and some flaked cooked salmon in my freezer, so I'm thinking of making fish cakes, which I haven't done before.
I think the sweet potato is going to be quite wet, so what would be best to thicken it up a bit? Would flour or breadcrumbs work?
I've seen recipes which say to just roll in breadcrumbs and others which say use an egg and flour first - which is best?
And finally - what should I serve them with? If they already have potato in them then more potato seems a bit carb heavy, but just serving with veg doesn't seem enough
Many thanks for your help!

Delia does a potato rosti fish cake. It may be better if using sweet potato?
To serve, salad or some green beans?0 -
I think if you add flour it might taste a bit claggy, though a few fresh breadcrumbs should be ok. Personally I'd not use either just shape and chill thoroughly. Then I dip gently in some flour, spray or brush with oil and bake for 20 mins. I think they hold together better if you bake them rather than frying. To serve yes it's bit carby but some wedges or chips go well and veg wise I like spinach, peas and green beans, a big dollop of tartare sauce and a lemon wedge. Perhaps if you don't want to cook another carb and feel the meal is a bit light make a soup or pudding to go with it.0

No way would I have more carbs with a carb heavy fishcake.
Just serve with a salad or 3 fresh veggies.
You can also add parsley, spring onions etc to the fishcakes.
Oh, and fry them in butter, not oil.0 -
I'd serve them with watercress, the large stuff you can get, not the small sort you can grow on a windowsill or maybe spinach, an onion salad and chargrilled peppers. I might also add s sweet chilli relish dip.0

I use a Delia recipe using tinned salmon which whilst delicious can also be pretty wet and difficult to work with. Well floured hands and a lot of time back in the fridge to set works for me
I serve with salad and for those that want, thin sliced brown bread and butter0 -
echo above comments make flash freeze and then cook works every time, also sometimes use organic stuffing mix as a filler.0
