House Deeds

I have transferred my mortgage to a new bank recently. The old provider have sent me a big pack through the post which contains historical documents that go back 100 yrs (charges, maps etc).
I guess I am now responsible for these docs. But are they valuable? What is their purpose and what are the consequences if I lose them?

These are records of past conveyances and may contain details of covenants which remain important.
I would suggest scanning them for safety and keeping the originals safe.
Your property will be registered at the land registry, so these documents are no longer your evidence of ownership and don't have the same value as previously.I am a mortgage broker. As kingstreet posts as the property is registered the proof of ownership is held by us electronically. The paper deeds are no longer a proof of ownership but can be useful to have and we would always recommend hanging on to them
